May 14: A Salvation Army relief team from the Hong Kong and Macau Command is on its way to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, to see how best the Army can provide help to the many thousands of people affected by the recent earthquake.May 8: The Salvation Army responds in the aftermath of the cyclone which has devastated much of Myanmar. Salvationists working on the ground in the region indicate that despite great difficulties and damage to property, members of The Salvation Army in Yangon have been providing cooked meals and water from their wells to desperate survivors of the Cyclone. Shelter is also being provided in Salvation Army halls and buildings which are still functioning. Major Philip Maxwell of Salvation Army Headquarters in Sydney said, “Today we are currently assessing how we can mobilise other Salvation Army emergency relief teams to enter the region and assist local Salvationists. We are trying to get as much information out of the region as possible however communicating is very difficult. The Salvation Army in Australia has sent $500,000 from its disaster relief fund for immediate use to help with the relief effort.” May 2: More than 123,000 young people so far have registered to take part in the 23rd World Youth Day, which is to be hosted by Sydney in July. The event is organised by the Catholic church but open to everyone and is to mark the first visit of Pope Benedict to Australia.
