Counselor - Florence Gruer
"The refugee process is filled with uncertainty about the future…” Over the past 15 years, I have had the privilege to meet refugees and immigrants from the four corners of our world. We have shared moments of utter frustration because of systemic barriers that block their way, but also moments of great joy. Fourteen years ago I encountered the harsh reality that many of the people arriving in Canada have been uprooted against their will. They have roots, a country, national identity, established culture, but are now refugees, seeking a place of safety without fear of persecution; searching for freedom and peace.
The refugee process is filled with uncertainty about the future, with long intervals of time between the various stages of the process. During this time refugees face additional challenges, such as separation from family members, learning a new language, participating in a society which often doubts their genuineness, barriers to employment due to lack of permanent status, along with many obvious adjustments, such as new customs, professional standards, weather, etc. My aim has been to listen, support, and provide orientation, counseling and assistance during the difficult days, weeks, months and yes, years, of navigating the refugee system.
Through the years a number of refugees have become well established. Whereas they once came to Canada fleeing persecution, violence and injustice, some have had the joy of returning to visit their birth country which is now free of violence, while others are still praying for peace, democracy, and equal rights to be a reality in their homeland.
Many hopeful immigrants also arrive in Canada with high expectations for a new life. They have gone through a rigorous application procedure to obtain Permanent Residence and arrive with excellent educational and experiential credentials. The process of adjustment is very difficult. Immigrants often face steep barriers to establishment, including the lack of recognition of foreign credentials and employers’ requirement of “Canadian experience”. Our goal is to provide the necessary tools for successful establishment, endeavouring to provide potential contributions to Canadian society can become reality. This work is being accomplished due to the committed teamwork between the newcomers, our volunteers, staff and school board E.S.L. instructors. We trust that God will continue to give us the vision and strength so that together we can forge ahead with determination and hope for a better future for newcomers.
