A decade worth of plans and preparations reached at a milestone on Friday May 18, 2007 with the Topping Off Celebration at the new Toronto Harbour Light construction site (corner of Jarvis and Shuter streets in downtown Toronto). The structural aspects of the building are all now in place with the final concrete poured at this 7 storey, 100,000 square foot facility. However, it will be many months yet before the building will be ready for the grand opening.

A good number of Salvation Army representatives were on hand for the Topping Off to thank the construction crew for their hard work. In addition, The Honourable George Smitherman, Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, spoke words of encouragement. In his public comments before all those gathered for the Topping Off Minister Smitherman stated that his appreciation for the Harbour Light was not solely related to his role as the Ontario Provincial Minister of Health but that his appreciation was very personal as well. He went on to explain that a number of years ago as he struggled with addiction he was in treatment at the Harbour Light. The Minister's comments had a powerful impact on those gathered.

Since 1960 The Salvation Army Harbour Light has stood at the corner of Jarvis and Shuter streets as a beacon of hope. The new facility where the old Harbour Light once stood will house the Harbour Light Addictions Treatment Program, the Harbour Light Corps (Community Church), and the Immigrant and Refugee Services, as well as a new Harbour Light ministry, a much needed Transitional Housing Program.
