General

Web

I am looking for information about the Salvation Army, can you supply this?

No, but we have an introductory page here.   Our mission is to supply the Salvation Army with internet services, and there are plenty of other sites on the internet that can help you with all aspects of the Salvation Army.

Here are some to get you started.

Anzwers

Excite

We also encourage you to visit the International Web Site and select your Country.

Why is everything free ?

The Salvos.com team consider the internet as our mission field. God has given us computer skills and we are to use these skills to spread the Word.  All hardware and software costs are absorbed by Techdesk, and hence all Salvos.com services are free.

Why does Salvos.com sometimes take a long time to answer emails ?

The Salvos.com team performs all the Salvos.com tasks in their spare time, which sometimes is very lacking.  Please be patient with us.  If you've not heard from us within 2 weeks, please email us again.

I want to help out

If you would like to help the work of Salvos.com then please contact us.

My corps is not located in Australia, does this matter ?

No.  You can be physically located anywhere in the world.

I have no association with the Salvation Army, can I still have some free web space?

No. Applications will not be considered if the purpose of the site is not related to the Salvation Army.

I have no association with the Salvation Army, and I have applied for web space and have received no reply!

Read the FAQ.  We will only respond to genuine requests.

I think there is a problem with the Salvos.com services !

Make sure the problem is not local to your machine.  Then contact us.

Can I have web space for a personal page ? ( e.g. not a corps nor a social centre page )

Yes.  The page needs to be totally dedicated to information about you and the Salvation Army.  For a good example of a personal page please visit Wesley Harris. Simply apply for the web space here.

Do I need permission from the Territorial Headquarters before I publish the site ?

Please check with your Territorial Headquarters in your Territory, and get permission if required.  If you are required to get permission to publish a site, please do this prior to your application for hosting at Salvos.com.  Once you have applied, we assume that you have either received permission, or do not require permission.

Should I have the site ready to be published prior to applying for web space ?

Yes, you must have the site ready to be published, prior to applying for the web space.  One of our terms of hosting is that you upload your site within 2 weeks, and we do terminate accounts if the web site is not loaded within 2 weeks.  Re-application generally is not successful.

How can I upload my web site ?

Uploading the web site is performed by file transfer protocol (FTP) or via MS Front Page.  During your application you have chosen which method you will use.

If MS Front Page, please consult your MS Front Page documentation or visit the Microsoft Web Site.

You will need a FTP client program that is properly configured.

We use and recommend CuteFTP and is available at http://www.cuteftp.com/

Configuration details as follows

site label = salvos.com
host address = ftp.salvos.com
userid and password = ? ( you have been given this )
login type = normal
transfer type = auto-detect
initial-remote-directory = ( your local directory where the web site is located )
port = 21
host-type = autodetect

all other fields are left blank

Once you connect to the ftp server, you can upload your site.

My Cute FTP keeps on giving message '425 Can't open data connection'

If you receive an 425 error, or an error that says "Cannot open data connection" or "Cannot build data connection", try connecting in PASV mode.

CuteFTP uses PASV mode to initiate all connections while the server only waits for requests.  When active, this feature helps avoid conflicts with the security system.  PASV mode is active by default. Clear the "Use PASV mode" check box to switch to PORT mode.

If you still cannot connect, try downloading CuteFTP Pro.

ftp://ftp.globalscape.com/pub/cuteftppro/cuteftppro.exe

or from here:

http://www.globalscape.com/files/cuteftppro.exe

Once you have downloaded CuteFTP Pro, install it and start it.

Enter your site information ( host, username, password ) and select settings / type / data connection type and choose "Use PORT" and then attempt to connect.

If this does not work then follow the directions to connect via HTTP and port 80.

To connect via HTTP and port 80

  1. On the menu bar, choose File > New > HTTP Site. The Site Properties window appears showing the General tab.

  2. In Label, enter any name you would like for the site.

  3. In Host Address, enter the regular FTP address for the site.

  4. In Username, enter your user name for the site.

  5. In Password, enter your password for the site.

  6. Click Connect.

I have uploaded but my web site does not work !

Your initial page needs to be called default.htm, you have probably called it default.html or index.htm or index.html or maybe it is missing completely.

Do I have to include a Salvos.Com logo on every page of my site ?

If you are a member you need to place a member logo on each page.

This will assist in Salvos.Com being noticed on the internet, and therefore increases the Salvation Army content on the internet, and decreases the cost to the Salvation Army to get on the internet.

I wish to design the page with MS Front Page, are the Front Page server extensions available ?

Yes, when you applied for the web space, you either requested FTP access or MS Front Page Web Access, so Front Page server extensions are available if you have made the correct choice. If you've not requested Front Page server extensions please request by sending an email to us.

We are looking for additional services such as domain name, or web site statistics, etc, can you help us ?

All Salvos.com services are free.

If you require additional services such as

  • web site statistics
  • domain name
  • email aliases for your domain name
  • shopping cart
  • secure server
  • databases

Please send us an email to us and we will then consider the request.  Most of the time you will be granted the additional service.

Frontpage server extensions support

Frontpage server extensions are provided free of charge by our host, but without any support.  Please no emails about Front Page server extensions to Salvos.com nor Techdesk.

I don't remember my password

For security reasons you will need to forward us the email containing your original application form for salvos.com services.  Upon receipt we will change your password to something that we deem is suitable and we will email you back with the password.
