Heroes
September 11th provided a host of unnamed heroes, many whose names will never be known. The firefighters, policemen and rescue workers who rushed to the site of the Twin Towers did so without any consideration for their own safety or lives. Many paid the supreme sacrifice as they attempted rescues. But how many lives were saved as a result of those heroes ! They provided hope to a nation that was reeling and provided the inspiration which was needed for ordinary people to carry on and rebuild out of the ashes of a horrific tragedy. One of the heroes was Todd Beamer, a passenger on flight 93 which crashed in a farmer's field in Pennsylvania. His wife, Lisa in her book, The New Testament book of Hebrews, chapter 11 presents us with a large list of heroes, those who did great exploits, those who made a difference. They were what they were and did what they did because they were men and women of FAITH Their faith was in a God who never failed them or let them down. Todd Beamer the hero of flight 93, by faith found the strength to face the challenge which was presented to him on that fateful day in September. The real heroes are the ordinary men and women of life who find their strength in Christ, as did Todd Beamer ! By FAITH we too can make a difference. The apostle Paul said: " I can do everything through him who give me strength." Philippians 4:13
" Let's Roll" tells of his conversation by cell phone to Lisa Jeffererson the telephone operator who was on duty that morning. Todd, after asking the operator to repeat the Lord's prayer with him, and asking her to contact his wife and tell her that he loved them very much, supported by his faith born of a personal relationship with God, shouted "let's roll" as he led other passengers in an attack on the high jackers of flight 93. His heroic effort, and that of the others, prevented the highjackers from their ulimate goal of reaching Washington DC and crashing into the White House or some other national landmark building and killing hundreds of people as had happened earlier in the morning with the other highjacked planes.
