Both Verna and I are retired Salvation Army officers. We retired in 1999 having served for 43 and 42 years respectively Appointments in Port Credit, Niagara
Falls, and Oakville Ontario were followed with a period in youth work. We were then appointed back to Newfoundland, where we served for 10 years in divisional leadership. An appointment as principal of the College For Officers Training in Toronto preceded our appointments to The Salvation Army territorial headquarters for Canada and Bermuda, from where we entered into retirement. During this period we were able to travel extensively in Canada visiting Salvation Army corps from St.John's in the East to Prince George In the West.
Verna continues to work part time in retirement at The Salvation Amy Archives, Canada and Bermuda Territory, and I work there fulltime having taken on the job as Director of the Archives and Museum in January 2004. Involvement in research and the history of The Salvation Army brings challenge and inspiration to us daily. We have one son, Paul who is married to Debra and they have two sons, Matthew and Michael. We live in close proximity to them and have frequent opportunity to visit and share in family celebrations, and the sporting activities of the boys, as well as worship with them in our home corps North Toronto Citadel where they are all involved in the various corps programs. We are proud of their accomplishments and the fact that they both love and serve the Lord. Paul and Debra are involved in a number of church activities.Debra sings in the songsters and Paul is Bandmaster of the Senior band. The boys also play in the senior band and also participate in other corps youth activities.
Both Michael and Matthew along with mom and dad love their favorite puppy Callie who is a Brittany Spaniel and loves to run through the bushes chasing squirrels.
in a variety of appointments. Our early years were served as corps officers (pastors) in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador both on the island of Newfoundland and in Labrador.
Prior to being commissioned as an officer Verna had taught school for five years as a teacher with the Newfoundland Department of Education. For the first few years of her officership she served in the duel capacity of corps officer and teacher, having responsibility for both the corps (church) and dayschool.
Paul is a Public School principal with a school population of 600 students, and is very sucessful in his chosen vocation. Debra is a registered nurse, and is now a senior administrator with Sunny Brook Hospital, one of Canada's largest health institutions.
Here are the four generations on my side of the family: myself, our son Paul, Paul's sons, Michael and Matthew and my father Edgar Carew who passed away in 1998. Early in his life he went to sea with his father Garland Carew, a master seaman, and his brother Wilson. He later left the sea and learned the building and cabinet making trade, becoming a gifted craftsman who could craft beautiful furniture and artifacts with his hands.
Matthew has completed university and is now enrolled in a paramedic course. He continues to participate in sports, especially golf. He is also a good musician and plays cornet in The Salvation Army North Toronto senior Band.

Michael is attending The University of Guelph. He plays baritone in The Salvation Army North Toronto Community Church senior band. He also has many other interests and loves to play golf.
