Charity Concert in aid of Betesda Charity
Anglia Fellowship Band & Guest soloists
Friday 12th February 2010 - Ipswich Citadel Salvation Army
An excellent evening was held at Ipswich Citadel as a fund raiser for the Betesda Chairty. Betesda, some 19 years ago, undertook to run a number of homes in Romania to care for the elderly, as the state there does not provide adequate facilities. Due to an earth tremor in 2009, one of the properties had to be re-plastered at a cost of £3,600.00. At the concert the sum of £1,700.00 was raised to help support this work. The Charity wishes to thank the Band and Ipswich Salvation Army for a worthwhile event.
For this occasion our soloists were David Winch (Tenor Horn, Norwich Citadel & International Staff Band) and Bram Bryant (Norwich Citadel, Vocal Soloist). The compere for the evening was Matthew Peek who added his usual ‘wit’ to the proceedings.
The Band items included ‘The Wellingtonian’ followed by ‘Ave Maria’. The Band also contributed ‘Sunbeam’, a request from a previous concert. Other items included ‘Viva Scotland’, ‘Peter, James and John’ (a Trombone feature) ‘On the Road’, ‘Hine Hine’, ‘Two Patriotic Airs’, ‘Golden Jubilee’ & ‘St. Teresa’.
David played ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘You love me’ and Bram presented ‘This is the moment’ and ‘Spirituals’.
The concert was a great success and it was excellent to be able to support Betesda in this way. If you are interested in the work of Betesda, please look at their website:

Approximately 300 people gathered at Norwich Citadel on a recent Friday evening for a festival of music given by Norfolk Fellowship Brass and The Anglia Fellowship Band in aid of ‘Balloons4Hearts’, the guest soloist being Andrew Piper (Clarinet).
‘Balloons4Hearts’ is a charity set up in Norwich to raise funds for a cardiology clinic at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, to alleviate patients in this area having to travel to Papworth Hospital for treatment. Members of both bands having such treatment have experienced these difficulties. This concert was in the way of a ‘thank you’.
The band items featured by NFB included ‘The Singing Heart’, Bram Bryant (Vocal Soloist), ‘Spirituals’, Ray Todd (Cornet and Bandmaster AFB) ‘Say you, say me’ joining with David Woodrow (Cornet and Bandmaster NFB) ‘Variations on a Swedish Folk Song’, ‘Jeannie with the light brown hair’ (Euphonium), ‘English folk songs from Somerset’, ‘True Colours’ and ‘Spirit’. The AFB featured ‘Spirit of Anglia’, ‘Jesus Folk’, ‘Bright and Beautiful’, ‘Take Up Thy Cross’ (Trombone soloist, Brian Midgley), ‘The Lost Chord’ and Tomado De La Mano’. Finally, the two bands united with ‘Hine e Hine’.
The magnificent sum of £1,248.00 was raised, a late night for the members of the AFB but well worth the effort.

Winter Festival - Saturday 1st December 2007
Ipswich Citadel Salvation Army

On Saturday evening, 1st December, a near capacity congregation settled into the Ipswich Citadel for a ‘Winter Festival’ arranged by John Askew, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Anglia Fellowship Band, supported by Ipswich Citadel Songsters and Timbrels and special guests. The programme was compered by our own Divisional Commander Major Alan Burns.
The event got off to a good start with the band playing a march ‘Spirit of Anglia’ which has been written specially for them by Kenneth Ketteringham. This was followed by a good old army traditional congregational song: ‘Keep in Step’, and then by two further golden oldies – the vocal march ‘Flowing River’ by Ipswich Citadel Songsters and the air varie ‘The Old Wells’ by the AFB.
The Band, under the baton of their bandmaster Ray Todd, presented a variety of music, both old and new, which included a selection from the SA musical Jesus Folk, a modern composition by Erik Silverberg entitled ‘Tomado De La Mano’ and an old meditation ‘Light of the World’ by Dean Goffin. For the solo trombone player, Brian Midgley, this was the first time he had played with the band in a festival setting and he enhanced his reputation as a renowned soloist with a sensitive rendition of ‘Take up Thy Cross’.
Ipswich Citadel Songsters, under the leadership of Jeff Layton, treated us to a mixture of music including ‘Dear Lord’, ‘Under His Wings’, ‘Take my love’, and ‘I know a Fount’. The timbrelists played two Christmas marches ‘The Carollers’ and ‘Christmas Praise’, which were well received, both of which were accompanied by the AFB.
Several guests added variety and novelty to the evening. Michael Blackburn (Diss) amused us with a monologue about the Creation, which he presented in a Norfolk accent. Patrizia Tazzini-Lloyd (Woodbridge CO) and her husband David captivated us with an excellent puppet show, in which Christian lyrics were presented to the well-known popular song YMCA. Juliet Parker (Ipswich Citadel) presented two items, the first one being a ‘quodlibet’, which was a quartet in which sections of three popular carols were sung consecutively and simultaneously, by herself and three other members of Ipswich Citadel songsters, and then she sang a solo entitled ‘I’ve got Joy’.
Former executive officer to the band, Lt Col Ray Caddy, led the devotional section, bringing us a message and bible reading, which was followed by ‘The Light of the World’.
Band Secretary Derek Mapes thanked all those who had been involved in an excellent evening and paid tribute to former members of the band, many of who were present, and also to the bandsmen who had been promoted to glory over the past 10 years. The baton was handed to founder Bandmaster Bram Scott to conduct the band in the final march of the evening ‘The Flag of Freedom’, before the benediction was pronounced and the evening came to a conclusion with an arrangement of the hymn tune St Clements, with the congregation being invited to join in the last verse.
Many thanks to Clive Harrold for the report and to Sheila Harrold for the photos... more photos will appear in our Gallery soon.
